This year, the Bilkent Volunteering Organization has welcomed a small group of foreigners who volunteer each Saturday at Osman Ünyazıcı İlköğretim Okulu in Sincan. The foreigners, who are either student or BUSEL teachers, have worked alongside Turkish students to provide opportunities for learning and play to disadvantaged children in the district.
Four to eight volunteers, who come from America, England, and even Korea, participate each weekend. Their focus is on “etkinlik,” or “activities,” which range from Bingo games to storytelling to playground exercise. With the recent warm weather, the activities have shifted outside: students have played tag and learned how to throw a Frisbee. The children are always really excited to see us and have shown a lot of enthusiasm for the activities.
